È stato in qualche maniera uno degli anni più belli e più duri della mia vita. Emozionante e impegnativo, avendo avuto così poco tempo per creare questo luogo che è probabilmente un progetto da due o tre anni condensato in dieci mesi. Ho lavorato con un ottimo team e, devo essere onesto, prima di iniziare questo progetto avevo una visione abbastanza cinica di Expo con la quale ho combattuto a lungo. Ho iniziato a pensare a quanto sarebbe stato divertente portare un pezzo di UK a Milano, cercando di rendere il Padiglione il più possibile un luogo sostenibile, tranquillo, amichevole. Il tema era estremamente complesso e più lo studiavo e approfondivo più mi rendevo conto della sfida: sono un artista, non un architetto, un ingegnere o uno scienziato e ho capito che quello che volevo era far vivere un’esperienza. Lo spazio credo evochi alle persone un genuino senso di emozione.

UK Pavilion project
This has been in many respects one of the best and hardest years of my life. It has been exciting and challenging, because we had so little time to create this place, which is probably a two-three year project condensed in ten months. I’ve worked with an excellent team and, to be honest, before starting on the project I had a rather cynical perspective on Expo, which I’ve had to battle against for a long time. I then started to think how fun it would be to bring a piece of UK to Milan, trying our best to make it a sustainable, peaceful and friendly Pavilion. The theme was extremely complex, and the more I studied and developed it, the more I realised what a challenge it would be: I am an artist, not an architect, an engineer or a scientist, and I understood that what I wanted was for visitors to live an experience. I think that this space sparks a genuine emotion in people.
