Sono un diplomatico di carriera e, quando ho fatto il concorso alcuni anni fa, pensavo di fare molte cose però la diplomazia dell’Expo non me l’aspettavo. E’ una diplomazia molto divertente, molto particolare. Innanzitutto è veramente operativa. Si tratta di convincere il maggior numero di Paesi a venire e partecipare all’Expo, vendere a loro un prodotto, creando la motivazione e spiegando il ritorno che possono avere.
Per me e il mio team è stato come affrontare delle montagne russe, dagli aspetti più concettuali, ai rapporti con i grandi responsabili di governo che vogliono capire perchè partecipare, fino alle persone che poi sono più operative a cui interessa sapere come ci si organizza: “Che spazio mi dai? Quanti metri? A destra e sinistra chi c’è?”.

I am a career diplomat and when I qualified a few years ago I thought I would do many things, but I was not anticipating being a diplomat for Expo. It’s a fun and unusual sort of diplomacy. First of all, it’s vey hands-on. What you need to do is convince the highest number of countries to participate to Expo, sell them a product, creating motivation a explaining the outcome they can expect.
For me and my team it was a bit of a roller-coaster ride, ranging from the more conceptual aspects, the relations with government representatives who want to understand why they should participate, to those with more operational figures who want to know how things are organised: “What space are you offering? How big is it? Who’s on the left and the right?”
