Ho vissuto Expo 2015 dal 2011, quando la Svizzera è stato il primo Paese ad aderire. Questa è la prima volta che partecipo ad un’Esposizione Universale, per me è un onore e un ‘esperienza molto intensa e appassionante, di grande lavoro. I miei colleghi che avevano già vissuto altre Esposizioni Universali mi dicevano che sono progetti complessi, per cui ci sono sempre delle sorprese. Una cosa che ho imparato è che si, c’è sempre una sorpresa ma la sfida è trovare subito una soluzione adatta ad ogni problema. Ad esempio durante la costruzione da 5 torri siamo dovuti passare a 4 torri e non abbiamo potuto costruirle in legno come da progetto per questioni di sicurezza. Molte sono state anche le questioni legate al contesto italiano, che è diverso da quello svizzero ma ho una grande ammirazione per Giuseppe Sala perché in tutte le situazioni è sempre riuscito a mantenere il timone della nave Expo e ad incoraggiare tutti ad andare avanti. Sono nato in Svizzera a San Gallo ma ho origini italiane perché mio padre era siciliano, dunque poter essere ad Expo e soprattutto poter vivere a Milano dal mese di marzo è un po’ come tornare alle proprie origini. E il fatto di potersi esprimere nella propria lingua, in italiano, e poter promuovere la propria cultura è certamente un aspetto molto positivo. Il nostro personale è la risorsa più importante, ognuno di noi è ambasciatore del proprio Paese in un Paese con il quale abbiamo davvero molto in comune.

I’ve been a part of Expo 2015 since 2011, when Switzerland was the first country to join. This is the first time I take part in a Universal Exposition, for me it’s a great honour and a very intense and thrilling experience, and a lot of work. My colleagues who had already experienced other Expos told me that they are complex projects, so we should always expect surprises. One thing I’ve learned is that yes, there is always a surprise, but the challenge is to immediately find a solution for any problem. For instance, during construction we had to reduce our towers from five to four, and for safety reasons we could not build them in wood as the design required. Many issues were linked to the Italian context, which is different from the Swiss one, but I have great admiration for Giuseppe Sala because on every occasion he always managed to steer the Expo boat in the right direction, and to encourage everyone to move forward. I was born in Switzerland, in San Gallo, but I have Italian origins because my father was Sicilian, so working at Expo and especially living in Milan since March is like going back to my roots. And being able to express myself in my language, to promote my culture, is certainly a very positive aspect. Our staff is the most important resource, each one of us is an ambassador of his or her country, in a country that shares a lot with ours.
