Sono biotecnologo veterinario, sostanzialmente mi hanno insegnato a fare gli animali transgenici in un Paese dove non si possono fare quindi come tutti i miei colleghi ho dovuto ricollocarmi lavorando nell’ambito dell’analisi dei cibi con strumenti molecolari e, per quanto riguarda la mia ricerca, con il DNA. Estraggo il DNA da matrici animali, vegetali e funghi e lo identifico. L’aspetto più interessante è quello applicativo perchè da queste ricerche di base nascono strumenti utilizzabili dagli enti di controllo per potenziare, ad esempio, le loro perfomance nelle ricerche di sofisticazioni alimentari aumentando la food safety. Questi assegni di ricerca, diversamente da altri, essendo calati in una realtà come Expo servono anche per mostrare a tutti quello che facciamo e l’utilità della nostra ricerca. In università non si studia solo sui libri ma si fanno anche cose interessanti.

I am a veterinary biotechnologist, basically I was trained to create transgenic animals in a country where this is not allowed, so as all my colleagues I had to find a different type of work, in my case in the field of food analysis with molecular tools, and specifically with DNA. I extract DNA from animal, plant and fungus matrixes and I identify it. The most interesting aspect of this research is its application for the creation of tools that can be used by inspection bodies, for instance to strengthen their performance when recognising food adulteration, thus increasing food safety. These bursaries are different from others: the fact that they are linked to an event like Expo helps people understand what we do, and the usefulness of our research. We don’t just study books at university, we also do interesting things.
